TCP/IP Principles and Protocols – COIT12206 Term 1 Standard Examination Solution

Instructions Sheet

  • 1. Write all answers in the Examination Answer Booklet provided.
  • 2. This examination comprises three parts, Parts A, B and C.
  • 3. Answer all questions in all three parts, Parts A, B and C.
  • 4. Write your answer clearly, and use numbered headings or subheadings to show which part of your answer refers to which question. Example: Question 2 (a).
  • 5. The total number of marks available in this examination is 65.

Answer ALL questions from this part.

Answer the following short questions, briefly and clearly.

Question 1

(a) Identify the following type of addresses from the given notation.

(b-1) 64:2B:13:45:61:12

(b) The following is a screenshot from pinging

Pinging [] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from bytes=32 time=470ms TTL=42
Reply from bytes=32 time=463ms TTL=42
Reply from bytes=32 time=463ms TTL=42
Reply from bytes=32 time=464ms TTL=42

Answer the following questions related to the screenshot.

  1. (i) What is minimum round trip time?
  2. (ii) Why has the round trip time changed from one ping to another?
  3. (iii) If the destination is 21 hops away, what was the value of the TTL field in the datagram carrying the reply ping message when it was dispatched by the destination?

(c) Layer 1 and layer 2 of the OSI model are sufficient to support the operation of a network in the delivery of data packets. Why then was layer 3 introduced?

(d) What is an Autonomous System in networking context? Briefly explain.

(e) Give any two pieces of information that DHCP server provides to a client.

Question 2

(a) What is a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN)? How is this different from a Partially Qualified Domain Name (PQDN)?

(b) MAA (Message Access Agent) are associated with email systems. What is the function of MAA? Give an example of a common MAA protocol.

(c) The Internet today consists of IPv4 and IPv6 compliant networks. A host with the address needs to send a packet through an IPv6 compliant network. What is this address in IPv6 address notation?

Question 3

Contrast Intradomain and Interdomain routing. How are they different? Give specific examples of routing protocols for each type.

Question 4

An organisation was granted an address block The organisation needs subnets, each with at least 60 host addresses.

(a) Find the required subnetmask.

(b) How many such subnets could there be?

Question 5

DHCP or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is useful in the administeration of a network.

Briefly describe and contrast the situations where Static allocation and Dynamic allocation approaches may be used in DHCP by a network administrator.

Question 6

An ICMP message was received.

The first part of the header (in hexadecimal) is: 0303102000000000 .. ..

(a) Identify the fields from the given header, and list their values.

(b) What is the overall meaning of the above ICMP message that was received?

Question 7

The Figure Q-7 contains a graph representing networks showing only the connection of five routers A, B, C, D and E. The figure also shows the initial values in their respective distance vector routing tables before the updates are made.

distance vector routing table after update

Determine the final values in the routing table for Router A and Router B after updates have been received from the other routers. In your answer, show only the three columns (To, Cost, Next) and their entries for the routing table in Router A and Router B.

Question 8

This question refers to layer 4 in the OSI model.

(a) Compare and contrast 3 (three) key features in UDP and TCP. Give brief but clear description in your answer. Your answer for this part of the question should not be a discussion on the details of fields or bits in the header.

(b) The TCP transmission has three phases. One of this is the Connection establishment.

(i) Briefly list the four actions in the three-way handshake for this phase of Connection establishment between a client and a server.

(ii) Use a suitable diagram to show the sequencing of the TCP segments passing between the client and server and any relevant states for this phase of Connection establishment. Clearly indicate the sequence numbers, related flags used and give suitable labels in your diagram.
